NEC approves Rs

June 28th, 2008 by Manufacturing Business

NEC approves Rs. 541 billion PSDP for Financial Year 2008-09, GDP.
For the next fiscal year, the NEC has set 4.4 percent growth target for the agriculture sector and 6.6 percent for the large-scale-manufacturing.

In the 2007-08 fiscal year, agriculture sector growth turned out to be 1.5 percent against the target of 4.8 percent, while manufacturing sector grew by 5.4 percent against the target of 10.9 percent.

The Deputy Chairman expressed the hope that policies the government plans to follow in future will revive traditional growth rate in the agriculture sector and the steps taken for industrial revival will improve growth in manufacturing.

‘It will be our efforts to increase the GDP growth beyond the set target,’ he added.

In the outgoing year, the services sector performed well with 8.2 percent growth, exceeding the target of 7.1 percent.

Day Two for Risk Aversion

June 25th, 2008 by Manufacturing Business

Day Two for Risk Aversion.
Eurozone Manufacturing posted a better than expected number yesterday, remaining above the 50 level. So Economic growth hasn”t slowed as much as the pundits have been going around talking about. Inflation remains the bugaboo for the European Central Bank (ECB) and ECB President Trichet.

I had a reader send me a very funny note yesterday regarding the Eurozone”s inflation problem. ‘A suggestion for the Eurozone. If they”re worried about rapid rising inflation stats, they should hire the U.S. stat calculation folks and they can moderate those nasty numbers and give them the great peace we have here in the USA!’

Now that”s funny! Whoa! We just had a streak of lightening outside my window here that was too close for comfort! It made me jump! The rain is falling so hard that it sounds like a train on our roof! Yikes! I”m sure glad I made it here before this all started! WOW!

Adding Value for True Position Measurement

June 18th, 2008 by Manufacturing Business

Adding Value for True Position Measurement.
As time passed, two developments in the manufacturing sector made the stationary CMM with limited software functionality less attractive. These were lean manufacturing and the use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in part design and manufacture.

With lean manufacturing came an emphasis on quickly and efficiently turning raw materials into pristine finished goods. No longer was it acceptable to inspect quality into parts or rework them; instead, quality needed to be built into the product on the first attempt. This meant time spent walking parts to and from the CMM needed to be minimized and errors in manufacturing needed to be caught early. This is why hand tools remained a viable option in the face of the new technology. Though limited in functionality, they were portable and could be used to do on-machine inspection.

Defense contracts help save tool and die industry

June 15th, 2008 by Manufacturing Business

Defense contracts help save tool and die industry.
John VanKirk, president and executive director of the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining in Latrobe, said Kennametal Inc. and Extrude Hone established the center to help smaller companies improve manufacturing processes on defense projects.

Customers estimate the center has helped them trim about $478 million in manufacturing costs over the past five years, VanKirk said. The center linked machine shops to bid together on contracts, winning about $123 million worth of defense work, he said.

‘In the past five years, we”ve seen rather significant growth,’ VanKirk said.

Dennis Thompson, chief executive officer of the Doyle Center for Manufacturing Technology in South Oakland, said the red tape in getting companies certified as military suppliers has kept most area businesses out of the market.
